Women’s History Month: March 2024 in Honor of Native American Women Veterans.
The VA Office of Women’s Health is recognizing Native American women veterans in recognition of Women’s History Month 2024. Native American women veterans have a 200-year history of military service, surpassing challenges and serving at a higher frequency than other groups. Currently, women represent 11.3% of the Native American veteran population, which is a greater proportion compared to other demographic groups.

Native American women chose to be Army nurses during World War I. By the end of World War II, there were about 800 of them serving in different parts of the service. During wars like the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the years after 9/11, they continued to serve in many jobs, from nurses to pilots. They now work in all parts of the armed forces.
